Our Staff Instructors

John Franzen

As a member of the Marine Corps, John served multiple combat deployments in Iraq, Afghanistan, and on-ship as a Fire Direction Controlman, Operations Chief, Forward Observer, and with Embedded Training Teams. His training includes multiple special training packages for combat marksmanship, combat trauma medic, combat water survival, a black belt in mixed martial arts, and Marine Corps shooting instruction for rifle and pistol.

Kevin Donovan

Kevin is a retired instructor from the Federal Bureau of Prisons. While there, his duties included firearm and self-defense instruction as well as a Tactical Liaison Officer and Negotiator with the Hostage Negotiation Team. Holding an MA and an MA Ed., he has instructed courses at Eastern Kentucky University and the former Lexington Community College. Kevin is a competitive shooter who has combined his firearms experience and educational background to become an NRA Pistol Instructor and Range Safety Officer.

Daniel Mays

Daniel served in the United States Army as an MP (31B Military Police) and was deployed in Iraq from 2010-2011. While in the military he attended numerous firearms training schools and received training in Personal Security Detail and Quick Reaction Force. Daniel is a certified NRA pistol instructor, Refuse To Be A Victim instructor, certified Chief Range Safety Officer, and KY CCDW instructor.

Zach Pavey

Zach competed on a national level with the University of Kentucky’s Pistol and 3-Gun Team and also served as President, Team Captain and Assistant Coach. Along with an impressive firearms training and competitive shooting background, he has been trained in first aid, trauma, CLS, CPR, mixed martial arts, and edged weapons. Zach has taught defensive handgun and carbine at both basic and advanced levels and is Lead Instructor for the range team at Buds.

Jack Tinsley

A military veteran with combat experience, Jack has also been a hunter, shooter, and reloader most of his adult life and involved in the firearms industry for over 10 years. Jack shoots sporting clays competitively and understands as only a shooter can the demands placed on a competitive shooter and shotgun. He knows how to fit your gun and how important that becomes as you grow in the sport.

Dan Maloy

Dan grew up in northern California in the San Joaquin Valley, where he and his family were avid bird hunters for many years. For the last 55 years, he’s been addicted to trapshooting. He’s traveled to tournaments in several states, including the Grand American Championship in Vandalia, Ohio on several occasions. His newest passion is sporting clays. Dan has been with Buds since November of 2013 as a Retail Sales Associate.

Doug Ramsey

Doug has a lifetime of firearms experience and twelve years with the nation’s largest firearms retailer–BudsGunShop.com, LLC–in buying, selling, marketing, operations, and government compliance, regarding firearms and related products.

Utilizing his Homeland Security education, Doug is currently directing Outreach, Education and Training efforts for Buds by developing educational seminars, mini-seminars, and expanding Buds’ training curriculum.  He also oversees Buds’ compliance spectrum.
